INDRUK - Hobie Minnebreuker
Product information "INDRUK - Hobie Minnebreuker"
Hobie’s artistic work explores the complexity of the human body—a subject that serves as both a protective armor and a source of vulnerability. Through photography, he examines how this armor can be damaged and how individuals cope with pain and uncertainty. This dynamic interplay of strength and fragility lies at the heart of their photographic practice.
All the pieces in this book are created using the photographic gravure technique, also known as photogravure or photopolymer gravure. The process begins by converting a digital image into film, which is then exposed onto a light-sensitive plate. Each plate is manually inked and printed using an intaglio press, resulting in a handcrafted and unique quality. For Hobie, the act of translating a digital image into a physical print is essential, allowing for hands-on manipulations that bring depth and texture to the final work.
Reflecting on his creative journey, Hobie shares:
"The past few years have been devoted to experimentation and creation. During my residency at AGALAB in Amsterdam in 2022, I had the opportunity to delve deeper into my work and explore new techniques. This research has culminated in this photobook, which I designed with graphic designer Suze Swarte, where all these experiments have found a place. The photobook you now hold is a collection of images, but it also reflects my artisanal approach and my vision of the human body. Together, we sought ways to integrate the experimental techniques I apply in my work into the design of the book.
Through personal experiences and the influences of my environment, I have come to view the body differently, and to reconsider how we see and experience it. You may recognize yourself or someone else in these visual stories, and I hope that through this book, you will appreciate the beauty in the imperfections of the human body."
